The Organization
The Yonkers Auxiliary Police Department is a trained, uniformed organization of men and women whose purpose is to assist the Yonkers Police during emergencies and at public events. Auxiliary Officers are volunteers and do not receive anything in return but the satisfaction of serving their community. The Auxiliary Police were established in 1941 as a Civil Defense unit. Since then, their duties have evolved to respond not only to emergencies and major disasters, but to deter crime by patrolling both on foot and in marked cars.
Members of the Auxiliary are certified as NEW YORK STATE PEACE OFFICERS with Firearms. Officers undergo extensive and continuous training administered by the Training Division of the Yonkers Police Department. The Yonkers Auxiliary Police Department is also a member of the New York State Association of Auxiliary Police.
The Yonkers Auxiliary Police can be seen working at parades, concerts, marathons, emergencies and any other event as instructed by the Director of Civil Defense., e.g. assisting Yonkers' Finest and the Secret Service during the visit of Pope John Paul II.
